February 17 – ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION AND IMPOSITION OF ASHES HOLY WEEK EASTER BIBLE STUDY Bible study each Wednesday at 7:00 P.M. All are welcome to attend. CATECHISM Classes are held each Sunday morning at 7:30 AM COMMUNITY BIBLE STUDY Dr. Kurt W. Borows will again be teaching the bible study at Firelands Presbyterial Church on SR 163 the 3rd Wednesday of each month beginning September 16th at 10:30 A.M. At Noon a lunch is served and the cost is $6.00. During LENT the study is held each week. LIVE NATIVITY Resurrection Lutheran Church had its LIVE NATIVITY for the third year. It was held on December 20th from 6PM to 7:30 PM. We hope to make this an annual event and we also hope to expand it each year. YOUTH PROGRAMS This space is being worked on. CHIME CHOIR Our Chime choir rehearses each Sunday morning after church services. We always welcome new chimers. VOCAL CHOIR We are forming a vocal choir and rehearsal is each Tuesday evening at 6:30 P.M. New voices are welcome and we hope you will consider singing along with us and make a joyful noise DR. JOHN E. BRAUN MEMORIAL PARK The original church site contained 18 acres. Six of those acres were used for the church and parsonage. The remaining 12 acres of land adjacent to the church was purchased and donated to the church as a recreatinal area for the Catawba Island Communiy. The park was dedicated in memory of Dr. John Bruan. It is to remain a permanent park for recreational use. The park is used by the youth of the area and has several baseball flields, a tennis court, play ground equipment and a shelter house as well as other sports activiteis. The shelter house can be rented for $75.00 by calling Larry Schultz at 419-797-2785. HONDURAN VITAMIN DRIVE Tim and Gayle Rink again represented Resurrection Lutheran Church as members of a medical mission trip to Central America. This year the team worked in Honduras from April 19th through the 26th. One of the most pevalent health problems the team encountered is malnutrition. A 90 day supply of vitamins was directly distributed to hundreds of people being evaluated and cared for during the mission trip. The entire mission team thanks Resurrection's Council for their endorsement of this outreach project and for the very generous contributions by Resurrection members in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
Resurrection Lutheran Church Minutes January 10th 2010 President Bill Barrere opened the meeting and pastor led us in prayer. Those present were Gary Durdel, Bill Robertson, Tim Rink, Linda Kolinko, Gayle Rink, Helen Jean and John Rofkar, John Hazzard, Charles Garrett, Darlene Fahey, Judy Petersen, Jenny Coleman, and Pastor Borows. Those absent were Jackie Roder, Jon T. Rasmussen, Kent Coleman, Jody Carstensen, and Ross Hazzard. Minutes: of previous meeting were read and approved. Gary Durdel made the motion and Darlene Fahey seconded. Discussion was held as to whether the minutes needed to be read. John Rofkar made a motion they not be read at the meeting and that they be emailed to all council members one week before each meeting. Charles Garrett seconded. Motion passed. Treasurer’s Report: December shows income of $11,757.00 and expenses of Pastors report: Funeral services were held for Eleanor Humphrey on January 2nd. New members Arnold & A.J. Woitha as well as Mike & Ginger Schenk were introduced on December 20th. Church Council installation was held on January 3rd. On January 10th new members Jim and Marlene Carpenter were introduced. Correspondence from the Synod office and the Bishops Winter meeting were discussed. The cave will stay up until after Easter and the three crosses will be moved to the other side of the church building so they can be seen more readily. Lenten services will start Feb 17th with Ash Wednesday, then each Wednesday on March 3, 10, 17, and 24th. Easter is April 4th Deacons: Charles Garrett was elected as chairman. He reported the organ has been checked over and is now working. He also has organists contracted through the second Sunday in March. Ash Wednesday will be the imposition of ashes. Pot lucks will be held at 6:00 each Wednesday before the service. The Lenten and Easter schedule will be given to Marlene Gulas to put in the newspaper and also to Dan Peterson as the chairman of the Vision Committee so he can put an ad in the Catawba Island Magazine.
Parish Education: The children are learning about angels. There are some youth activities scheduled . There will be a bowling party and a Valentine date with God for dinner and a movie. The information is on the table in the Narthex along with forms and the info will also be put in the bulletin. Trustees: The Wylie’s have signed the new least and their rent has gone back to $600.00. They have also reported the refrigerator is leaking so we will be looking at getting a new one. Bill Barrere suggested the parking lot lights be put on a sensor instead of the timer and he will look into the cost. Old Business: The Constitution Committee has the following suggestions: In the short term we need to contact attorney John Coppler to have him reinstate our articles of incorporation for our non-profit status. We then need to have him check over the constitution. Pastor stated at this time we are still a part of the ELCA but we are in opposition to their ways and can not therefore support them. They are very much aware of our position. Tim Rink made the motion to contact Core and have someone come here to talk to the congregation. Motion was seconded by Charles Garrett. Motion passed. A motion was made to send the 2009 benevolence money collected to Luther Home of Mercy. Motion seconded by Charles Garrett. Motion passed. Next the Landscape project was discussed. Bill Barrere provide the cost estimate from J&J Concrete. The cost for just the front stoop is $152.00. If we extend that to include the front sidewalk the cost will be 1,056.88. The cost for the back sidewalk which is in very bad shape is $2026.00. The extension to the back parking lot would be $484.50.
New Business: We have received info from LOMO and it was passed on to Cynthia Durdel. She requested council’s guidance before she proceeds. Charles Garrett made the motion to proceed and Gary Durdel seconded. The matter of Focus on the Family was discussed as we are now receiving 3 different inserts from this company. It was decided to keep using only the Focus on the Family and cancel the rest. Charles Garrett made the motion to adjourn and Gary Durdel seconded. Meeting was closed with the Lord’s Prayer.
